How Films are made

Most of the major processes such as 

Pre-Production


Storyboard example

Before production, the following takes place.

  • The basic concept and story board is made
  • Crew and actors are offered and casted
  • Areas and location are scouted
  • A script is written, edited and finalised
  • prop and wardrobe is identified.
  • Special effects are identified
  •  Sets are constructed.
  • A Script read through with the cast
  • A production schedule
  • A Soundtrack is composed

Production


In large feature films some people call this 'the point of no return,' this is because after production begins, it become cheaper to see the project through rather than cancel it. Freeze- frames and photography is used as a reference to the cameramen, so they know where to place their cameras. This is called Principal photography and it is used for every single camera shot.  They then shoot the movie. The soundtrack is often composed, by a separate team

Post-Production

They begin editing the movie footage and sometimes have some re-shoots and pick-up shots

 They sometimes use pick-up (shots that "pick-up"from  mid-scene)  shots when they notice problems or mistake, sometimes in very rare occasions there is a script change to deal with some mistakes.

They begin blending the soundtrack with the movie which includes sound effects and music. They also text and graphics however, the longest process in post production is the special effects and CGI which involves building and animating models and integration of these 3D models into movies. They also may have to use CGI to integrate onto characters  e.g. in Iron Man, Tony Stark's suit is mostly CGI. They also have to correct the colour of the movie and in some cases they may add filters for effect.

movies are marketed and advertised in order to draw an audience. Hollywood movies often spend an average of $36.9 million dollars to market.
Marketing is largely base on stereotypes and uses different median for age groups. For example a kids film often uses happy meal toys and adverts during kids programs where as a "middle class" film about the queen would be advertised in newspapers such as the  Times.

  • Youtube/video ads
  • Small Video games
  • Street ads
  • Bus ads
  • Tube ads
  • Sponsorship
  • Music/ popular song adaption.
